Who can get help
Baluchon Long-term Respite Care’s services are offered throughout Quebec to caregivers of a non-autonomous adult.
This includes people who are bedridden, suffering from Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, in palliative care or at the end of life. People with autism, physical or intellectual disabilities are also included, as are elderly people with neurocognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s.
In short, anyone whose autonomy is sufficiently limited that they cannot be left alone for several days without supervision at home.
Being a caregiver
According to the Quebec government, a caregiver is defined as a person who provides regular and constant unpaid care to a loved one who needs help and assistance with the basic activities of daily living (e.g., getting around, eating, dressing) due to a severe and prolonged impairment in mental or physical functions. You can house or live with your loved one.
Do you identify yourself as a caregiver and are you looking for a solution to get some rest? Do you feel isolated and would like some time to yourself? Would you like to go on vacation, visit family or friends who live far away?
Are you hesitating to leave? We can help. And if you don’t have a place to go during your respite, Baluchon Getaway has a solution for you.
How can I get help?
- Step 1: Talk to a healthcare professional
Public health network (PHN) provider: doctor, social worker, occupational therapist, nurse, etc. To receive respite work services, your application form must be completed and forwarded by a network healthcare worker. This is the mandatory process that applicants must go through to obtain our respite and support service at a subsidized cost of $15 per day. We remind you that Baluchon Long-term Respite Care is a community organization that benefits from government financial support throughout Quebec. Your network healthcare worker should also inform you about other resources available in your area, and help you find the one(s) that best meet your needs. Don't hesitate to contact him or her.
You can also contact your local CLSC and ask to be guided through the psychosocial intake process.
Important: it's essential that you go through a network healthcare worker for all your requests whether this is your first baluchonnage or you’ve already had one before. Please note that even if you have already had a baluchonnage in the past, you must repeat the same procedure for all your new requests.
- Second step: with Baluchon Long-term Respite Care
Once your healthcare worker has sent us your request for respite (by e-mail), the Baluchon Long-term Respite Care's team confirms receipt of your request by sending an acknowledgement of receipt to your network agent (by e-mail) within 10 working days.1
Important: please note that an acknowledgement of receipt indicates that we have received your request, BUT does not indicate that it has been accepted.
1 Please note that during busy periods, response times may be longer.
