Mission and values

Overview of the organization

Everyone, one day, can become a “caregiver” or a “helper.” At any point in our lives, regardless of our intentions or place in society, we can become vulnerable and end up needing help. That’s why Baluchon Long-term Respite Care exists, and why the caregiver-care recipient dyad is at the heart of its mission.

Baluchon Long-term Respite Care (Baluchon Répit long termeMD) is a Quebec-based non-profit organization (NPO) with over 20 years of experience. Its mission is to offer respite over several days to caregivers who wish to keep their non-autonomous loved ones at home, while supporting and providing guidance to the caregiver before and after the in-home respite care process. It is the only non-profit organization offering long-term in-home respite care (4 to 14 days), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout Quebec since 2019.

  • We know that being a caregiver is a mission in itself;
  • We know that it requires a major reorganization of life and time;
  • We know that it requires energy, money, patience and endurance;
  • We know that the situation can lead to social isolation and psychological distress;
  • We know that this mission is not always a choice;
  • We understand your reality and we’re here for you!

Let us help you take care of yourself and support you in continuing to care for your loved one...

A unique in-home respite solution

A “baluchonnage” is a unique and innovative in-home respite care solution. Over the years, its reputation and credibility among the general public and the Quebec government have grown. Its mission is in line with the desire of families to keep their loved ones in their own environment, whether they are non-autonomous or coping with an increasing loss of autonomy.

Since 1999, specialized respite workers (baluchonneuses in French) have been deployed throughout the province to visit homes in order to:

  • allow caregivers to take a break without having to move their loved one;
  • support the caregiver-care recipient dyad by transmitting new knowledge and skills to caregivers, and by sharing personalized intervention strategies adapted to their situation.

Baluchon Long-term Respite Care is proud of its real positive impact on the well-being of caregivers and society.
